Employers who invest in upskilling their workforce through learnerships typically enjoy several advantages. Employees are more likely to remain committed to a company that recognizes their value and invests in their professional growth. Learnerships focus on on-the-job training, which enhances technical expertise without negatively impacting performance or productivity, as seen with traditional learning methods. Consequently, employers can anticipate increased productivity and profitability, as motivated employees actively contribute value to the company.
Benefits For Participants
Learnerships provide an excellent alternative for working individuals unable to pursue full-time studies due to work commitments. IRIS learnerships expose participants to technical expertise and cutting-edge knowledge directly relevant to their respective fields. These programs offer participants an opportunity to attain nationally recognized qualifications. Additionally, obtaining a relevant qualification can boost self-esteem, job satisfaction, and overall performance.

Why Invest in Skills Development?
Skills development entails allocating 6% of the annual payroll to benefit black employees. The thresholds for classification as an Exempted Micro Enterprise (EME), Qualifying Small Enterprise (QSE), or Generic Entity (GE) are as follows:
– EME: Annual turnover under R10 million is exempt from BEE. – QSE: Annual turnover between R10 million and R50 million. – Generic (Large) Entity: Annual turnover of R50 million or more.
A generic entity is obligated to allocate 6% of the leviable amount to training as specified in the Learning Programmes Matrix for black individuals. At least 0.3% of the leviable amount should be allocated to training black individuals with disabilities. Learnerships, apprenticeships, or internships for black employees and unemployed black individuals are required for a generic entity, with a target of 2.5% of the entity’s total workforce for black employees and unemployed individuals. The Economic Active Population (EAP) targets apply to each skills development sector indicator of a generic entity. For QSEs, 3% of the leviable amount must be allocated to training.
According to the B-BBEE Learning Programme Matrix, learnership programs satisfy the requirements of B, C, and D categories, making it easier to achieve the 6% training target. Furthermore, offering employment opportunities to unemployed youth (18.2’s) can earn a company five bonus points.
